Flood lighting refers to a lighting method that makes a specific lighting area or a specific visual target much brighter than other targets and surrounding areas. The main difference between flood lighting and general lighting is that the location requirements are different. General lighting does not consider the needs of special parts, and is set to illuminate the entire site. When designing the flood lighting of a building, the light source and lamps should be selected according to the material, smoothness and shape of the building surface.
Flood lighting technical requirements
1. Angle of incidence
It is the shadows that bring out the undulations of the façade, so the lighting should always provide an image of the surface, a light hitting the façade at a right angle will not cast shadows and make the surface appear flat. The shadow size depends on surface relief and the angle of incidence of the light. The average illumination direction angle should be 45°. If the undulation is extremely small, this angle should be greater than 45°.
2. Lighting direction
For surface lighting to appear balanced, all shadows should be cast in the same direction, and all fixtures lighting a surface in a shadow area should have the same cast direction. For example, if two lights are aimed symmetrically perpendicular to a surface, shadows will be reduced and confusion may appear. Therefore it may not be possible to see the surface undulations clearly. However, large protrusions can produce large dense shadows, in order to avoid destroying the integrity of the façade, it is recommended to provide weaker lighting at an angle of 90° to the main lighting to weaken the shadows.
3. Perspective
In order to see shadows and surface relief, the direction of illumination should differ from the direction of observation by an angle of at least 45°. However, for monuments that are visible from several places, it is not possible to strictly adhere to this rule, the main viewing point should be chosen, and this viewing direction is given priority in the lighting design.
